Tax disputes can be complex, high‑stakes and are often commercially or reputationally significant. Positions may be challenged by HMRC or international tax authorities, requiring careful handling from the outset and, where necessary, rigorous preparation for litigation.
We act for corporates, financial institutions and private clients in domestic and international tax disputes, providing senior‑led support across the full lifecycle, from initial enquiry through to resolution.
We advise on all forms of contentious tax matters, including revenue authority enquiries, technical challenges and litigation. We conduct litigation before the UK tax tribunals and courts and manage international litigation and cross‑border dispute resolution. Our lawyers have extensive trial experience, having acted in high‑value and complex cases at first instance and at all levels of the UK appeal courts. This experience informs our approach from the outset, shaping arguments, anticipating HMRC’s position and preparing cases that stand up to scrutiny.
Our practice covers the full lifecycle of a dispute. We assist clients in responding to HMRC enquiries, developing technical positions, preparing for mediation or ADR and conducting litigation where required. Our work focuses on identifying the key technical and factual issues, assessing litigation risk and pursuing outcomes that are proportionate and effective.
We act across all major taxes and sectors, with particular experience in VAT and indirect tax disputes, environmental taxes, transfer pricing and international tax controversies. We also advise on commercial disputes involving tax, applications for judicial review and claims relating to tax professional negligence.
We work closely with in‑house tax teams, general counsel and external advisers, and are regularly asked to support board‑level reporting and discussions around litigation risk. Where relevant, we assist clients and their auditors in assessing provisions and uncertain tax positions, ensuring the dispute process is aligned with financial reporting.
We focus on distilling complex issues into clear, persuasive arguments and maintaining momentum toward resolution. Whatever the nature or scale of the dispute, we provide pragmatic, senior‑led support focused on protecting financial and reputational interests.
